Dear International Living Reader,
This time next year, with the right connections, you could finally own your own second “dream home”…
…and live right on the beach, in the mountains, or in the big city—for $147,000 or less…
You could start taking advantage of the world’s most benefit-laden retirement programs…
…and cut your cost of living by 35% to 50% or more…
You could finally start spending most of your time pursuing what really interests you…
…and learn how to tango, salt-water fly-fish, or create mouthwatering Mediterranean dishes from scratch…speak Spanish, Croatian, or Thai…become a travel writer, travel photographer, or import-export entrepreneur…teach English to underprivileged children, volunteer in the local community, or start your own charity…
And you could even start maximizing your spending power while minimizing your tax liability…
…and protect your assets from outsiders…open an offshore bank account…invest in undervalued real estate…or even open your own B&B, tour company, or dive shop…
When you allow yourself to consider the possibilities beyond U.S. borders, you’re on the road to discovering just how romantic, exciting, interesting, inspiring, and profitable life can be.
But you’ve got to make the decision to open your mind. It’s a single, straightforward…but, at the same time, dramatic and potentially terrifying choice.
Here’s my personal challenge to you right now:

…then I have three words for you:
Do it now.
Make 2008 the year you finally start transforming your thoughts and dreams into something real…something you can touch…something you can start enjoying with friends and family—as soon as possible. Don't let another year slip by as you dream and imagine and wonder.
Get started—right away.
But where do you start? What do you need to know? And who will help you answer the biggest questions you’ll face when planning your new life overseas?
|
These key questions, and many others, are best answered by the experts.

Like you, many of our speakers once had a dream of living and prospering overseas. And they’ve got some great stories to tell about “how they did it” At the Ultimate Event II, you’ll hear the stories of established expats such as: Lee Harrison—Roving Latin America Editor: “I recalled that a few years earlier, I’d received an ad in the mail for a newsletter dedicated to people wanting to retire overseas. At the time, I had rejected the idea as being impossible and thrown the ad away. But now that I was convinced it could be done, I wished I had that ad back. I went to the computer, called up Yahoo, and typed in “retire overseas.” There it was—International Living. I called the “800” number and signed up.” “Now, a whole new horizon opened up. While the books I’d purchased had given me an in-depth study of expat life in the country, now I had at my disposal real estate examples, names of agents, and a wealth of contacts to get me going. And it was all written by people who knew what I wanted to do and tailored to the analysis I was trying to perform. There was even a library of related books and manuals for the places I wanted to focus on.” “Now, we’re based out of Punta del Este, Uruguay. These days I spend most of my time travel writing, and we both enjoy traveling to the places that I write about. We’ve traveled to the Galapagos Islands, where we enjoyed world-class diving and beaches and got to know an environment unlike any in the world. We’ve also been to the Amazon rainforest, traveled up and down the coast, and explored the endless mountains with their old colonial cities and villages. Julie plays for the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra and volunteers with the kids at the music conservatory. These are things we’d never had a chance to do before, and we treasure the opportunity to do them now.” “In fact, that’s what re-inventing yourself and moving overseas is really about. It’s about a second life. You can spend 15 or 20 more years in your present life, doing pretty much the same things you’re doing today, or you can grab a second life experience instead—a new city, a new culture, perhaps a new occupation, and a new language. I say it’s two lives for the price of one.” “Most of us have moved at least once in our adult lives, and when you think about it, in the end, your move overseas is just that—a move. Last time you moved, did you spend years on end analyzing the perfect location? Probably not. You most likely did a reasonable amount of research and then took the plunge.” “After all, the worst-case scenario is that you’ll want your old life back. In that case, you can move back and be right where you are today. We have never—not once—looked back on our decision to retire early and move overseas…not a single moment’s regret. However, what I have thought about is whether or not I could have done this sooner. Because those years of delay—perhaps years of rehashing and re-analyzing—are years of your new life that you can’t get back.” Steenie Harvey – Contributing Editor and Globetrotting Travel Writer: “18 years ago, I lived in England’s industrial heartland. My job wasn’t glamorous or well-paid—I was an office clerk in a printing factory. Preparing invoices, answering telephones, devising excuses why customers’ orders weren’t ready. We left for a number of reasons. General dissatisfaction with life played a big part, but rising crime and falling education standards were factors too. Our daughter was 13, and England seemed a dreadful environment in which to raise a teenager. After she got stoned by a gang of youths—they objected to her Girl Guides uniform—I realized the country was shot to hell. We swapped that life for a new one in western Ireland. (In 1988, sound cottages sold for a mere $10,000.) And rather than returning to the 9 – 5 grind, I created my own job—as a freelance travel writer. It’s turned out pretty well. I live in an astoundingly beautiful country, have no fears for my family’s safety...and I get paid to travel the world. The stone-throwing yobs did me a big favor!” Mike Cobb – President, Gran Pacifica: Almost four years ago my wife and two-year-old daughter moved to Managua, Nicaragua for my work. We had originally anticipated a three- to five-year time but have grown to love our new home and plan to stay another five to seven years at this point. The reasons are very simple. When we were ready to have children, we moved from the DC area to a small town about 60 miles west of the city for the small town values we wanted for our kids. We lived there for two years and then we moved to Managua, a city of 1.2 million and really found the "small town" values we so much desired. The love of family and real commitment to family is routine here. Values such as respect for parents and other "elders" lives strong among the children. People are addressed with respect and I rarely if ever hear a child yell at an adult. Church attendance is high even among the youth, and a social conservatism is the norm. The other real surprise was just how much our quality of life improved. Certainly, having domestic help sounds good, but the reality of never having any household chores has created a scenario whereby we have much more quality family time together. Every weekend, we decide what we want to do, and in the evenings, we can spend our time reading, playing games, or doing puzzles. Time together as a family is important to us, and so are the values of our children's friends. In the search for the "small town values," the irony is that a city in a foreign country delivers more of what we wanted for our girls and for ourselves. We are happy to be "home" in Managua. You’ll get the chance to meet and hear more from Lee, Steenie, Mike, and many other intriguing, well-traveled International Living staff, presenters, and fellow attendees at International Living’s Ultimate Event II. |

See the world from a new perspective, with a new life overseas. |
As you know, for the past 27 years, we at International Living have been helping our readers make their dreams of starting a new life overseas come true. Take a look:
“The World’s #1 Retirement Haven”
John Pasey was an engineer with a waste-management business in San Francisco. His work took him to more than 50 countries, so it’s safe to say he knows the world quite well. In 1999, he sold his business and retired to Panama.
Now he and his wife Cheryl own a villa on the remote tropical island of Contadora, where they spend plenty of time relaxing each year.
“We thought we were buying a vacation home, but what we really got was a big new family of fellow island dwellers,” said John. “When someone catches fish, it turns into a social dinner with the other residents.”
“We can walk to the beach and usually have it to ourselves,” Cheryl added. “But when we see someone else they’re always friendly. On this little island, we’re all friends.”

Panama has been International Living's top retirement pick for six years running. It's a nation worth your consideration—both as a place from which to base a business and for a part-time or full-time home.
What you'll learn at this conference will serve you well no matter where you wind up. But you should know, too, about these particular benefits Panama offers…
Affordable First World Health Care—Panama's health care facilities are the best in Central America. And they should be, they were built to U.S. standards while the U.S. was running the Panama Canal. You'll find nearly any health care services that you could ever want, but at a fraction of the prices and with a level of personal service— house calls for example—that you can no longer find at home.
The World's Premiere Pensionado Program—save on almost everything…including recreational travel. As a pensionado you'll receive: 50% off entertainment such as movies, theaters, concerts, and sporting events, 30% off boat, bus, and train fares, 25% off airline tickets, up to 50% off hotel stays, and 25% off at restaurants…
Modern Infrastructure—Panama has great roads, high-speed Internet access, cable TV, electricity that works 24/7 just like back home, first-rate health care, drinkable water, edible fruits and vegetables…and much more. Once again, because much of the infrastructure was built for the benefit of U.S. troops and canal personnel stationed in Panama, you'll find things work much like they do at home.
Great Shopping—You can find nearly anything that you want. Panama has numerous modern shopping centers. Plus many of the stores that you love to shop at back home. Panama boasts American-quality goods and services…pretty much all of the modern conveniences you're used to…only, in Panama, you won't be paying anywhere near U.S. prices for them.
Generous Incentives for Entrepreneurs—Unbeatable advantages for entrepreneurs include the investor residency program and a host of financial incentives—especially tax relief.
It’s easy and affordable to get to and from Panama: Panama is perhaps the most accessible retirement haven for Americans. There is a frequent nonstop service to Panama City's Tocumen International Airport, and it’s only a short 2½-hour flight from Miami on American Airlines and COPA, Panama's national airline, which also flies from Los Angeles and Orlando, Fla. Continental flies from Houston and New York, and Delta flies from Atlanta. Aeroperlas and Mapiex Aero are two domestic carriers that offer daily flights throughout Panama.
“North America’s Most Popular Retirement Destination”
Fed up working 12-hour days as a family physician in California, Murray Friedman uprooted and left the rat-race behind. He opted for Mexico, where he and his partner run a B&B in San Miguel de Allende—a destination famous for its charming colonial architecture, natural hot springs, and mild, year-round weather. Now it’s Murray’s adopted hometown.
“Life’s too short” is Murray’s mantra. “Here, we have a new-found appreciation of each day. We enjoy our new lives tremendously.” To top it all off, Murray notes, “People smile at strangers—in New York, most avoid making eye contact. There is plenty of entertainment around town—from tango dance lessons to jazz sessions and performances by local musicians to get you in the festival mood.”
Not only is Murray’s new business in Mexico profitable, but enjoyable and fulfilling as well…“Last year, our occupancy rate was 95%,” says Murray.
“On www.tripadvisor.com we have been ranked the top place to stay for the Inn/B&B category in San Miguel for more than six months… We have excellent staff and make friends with many of our guests.”
“The World Is Our Home”
Paul and Vicki Terhorst retired young (they were in their 30’s) and have traveled the world ever since. As Vicki puts it “the world is our home. Our first stop as perpetual travelers was a stay with friends in London. Before boarding our plane from Dallas to London, we picked up a new laptop computer. The age of Internet and e-mail was just beginning, and we wanted to be a part of it. Paul set up a homepage so family and friends could keep track of us.”
“We reveled in our freedom, which came more from our internal attitude than from our external, ever-shifting addresses. We felt the best way to know a place was to live there as a native rather than a tourist, so we set up housekeeping again and again.”
“We ended up choosing Las Vegas, Chiang Mai, and Paris for our longest stays—stays longer than a year. Shorter stays of at least one month included cities like Sydney, Ubud, Merida, Quebec, London, San Diego, and Buenos Aires. We circled the world several times.”
“Our life will continue to evolve in surprising ways. Right now we see Argentina as our second home…our vacation home. Our first home is the world, and we’ll continue to travel. What will happen in a year…five years…in ten years? Who knows?”
This is just a small handful of readers who replaced their former routines with much more exciting, fulfilling, and unique activities. They’re now doing the things they’ve always dreamed of doing. The kinds of things they did before life got “complicated.”
And some of them are even starting new businesses—and making a profit while they’re at it.
You can start living just like this, too…and much sooner than you think...

Find your very own Paradise and live the life you've always dreamed of. |
My name is Kathleen Peddicord, Publisher of International Living.
Over a year ago, I was chatting with my daughter, Kaitlin, who was 16 at the time. Like many teenagers, Kaitlin isn’t shy about speaking up when she’s got something on her mind. But what she said to me this time was, well, a little surprising…
“Mom, does it ever bother you that your life is over?”
Over? At first, I was shocked. It had never occurred to me to think that my life was “over.” Far from it.
But, Kaitlin couldn’t imagine what more might lie ahead for me. I’m married. I have two children. “I’ve had the same job forever,” as Kaitlin puts it. “I’ve traveled. Seen some of the world. What more could there be?”
Yikes, I realized…could there be any truth to Kaitlin’s question?
“Is life really ‘over’ at some point?”
“Are fun and excitement eventually replaced by stress and worries?”
“Do people wind up telling themselves, ‘There’s got to be more to life than this…?’ Only, then, to spend years wondering about what that something ’more‘ might be?”
Maybe…sometimes…for some people. But I’m happy to report…not for anybody I know. The truth is, thinking about questions like these is a complete waste of time.
When you make the world your playground, you’re always starting new and exciting things…just like you did in your free-spirited early years. You could:
Open a new jewelry shop in Mexico…Teach scuba-diving in Honduras…Start a new import-export business in Ecuador…Teach English in Vietnam…Write a novel in Paris…Surf in Nicaragua…Open a ranch in Argentina…Own your own olive grove in Italy…Restore an old castle in Romania…Start your own charity in the Dominican Republic…Ride a donkey in Greece…Learn salsa dancing in Uruguay…Own and operate your own vineyard in New Zealand…
…the possibilities are as limitless as your imagination.
Yes—when you expand your world beyond your own shores, your future can be just as big, bright, bold, new, and exciting as that of any teenager or young adult…
Meet us at the Ultimate Event II—the biggest, most comprehensive, most prestigious gala event International Living hosts throughout the year, this October 24-27 at the sensational Sheraton Hotel & Convention Center in the heart of fast-booming Panama City, Panama, and you’ll learn, step-by-step, exactly what you need to do to make what will likely be your most epic adventure ever a tangible reality—as soon as possible.

Tired of the rat race...set up a guesthouse on Croatia's stunning Dalmatian Coast. |
The Economist Intelligence Unit recently published its most recent 2007 Worldwide Cost Of Living Survey…and if you’re interested in Latin America, you’re in luck. According to the report, which ranks the cost of living in 132 major international cities, “Those looking to live on a budget should move to Latin America, which accounts for a quarter of the cheapest 30 cities. The cost of living in Buenos Aires is a little over half that in New York.” Take a look:
At the Ultimate Event II, our panel of over 90 offshore experts—many of which are based in Latin America, will help you compare and contrast all of Latin America’s most promising destinations… |
If you’ve ever done any homework on starting a new life overseas, you’re probably aware that the more research you do, the more confused you are…
The list of questions goes on and on and on…
Maybe you dream of a new life in Paris—complete with a view of the Eiffel Tower from a 17th-century restored loft where you can smell the fresh croissants baking outside your window and watch passers-by stroll down the narrow cobblestone streets…
Or maybe big-city living is out of the question.
Maybe you want to live right on the beach. “Give me the sand and surf outside my doorstep in the morning—and breakfast served by my maid,” you say. “I want waves lapping right in front of me. Sea, sand, swaying palm trees, and sensational sunsets. And I want to grill that $2 lobster I bought from a local fisherman for dinner tonight!”
Or maybe you still can’t make up your mind. Maybe you dream of:
The more you think about it, the more confusing it gets. That’s why it helps to have a strong set of inside contacts—well-informed, “in-the-know” expats, professionals, and locals who have already made the big move and are now reaping the benefits of an overseas lifestyle.
Since all the experts you’ll meet at the Ultimate Event II have many years of overseas living, traveling, and work experience, they can show you the quickest, cheapest, and most hassle-free way to get what you want from the offshore world—while avoiding all the pitfalls along the way.

If you’ve never attended an International Living event before, you’re in for a treat. Check out what some of our past attendees have to say about recent International Living events: “Wonderful, informative first day—looking forward to tomorrow. Great entertainment at cocktail hour. Fun!” “Terrific info…fast-paced speakers hit all the highlights and did not get bogged down in tedious details, but did tell us how to find that detail.” “Eye-opening, to say the least. It’s doubtful I could have gathered some of the information on my own. In fact, I question how long it would have taken me to learn—on my own—even a fraction of what you’ve presented. Thank you so much for putting on an informative, interesting meeting. I was impressed!” “These conferences are incredible—always exposed to valuable information that the average person may not have even considered to learn about.” “Exceeded my expectations. Great event. Excellent. Enjoyed the accessibility of everyone involved. There were no superstars who were ‘too good’ to rub elbows with everyone.” “I am impacted beyond words. The plans I came away with have changed—changed for the better, because I have more to work with. Now our approach can be more direct—focused with very specific goals to achieve.” “It was clear to me after meeting the speakers and staff of IL that they are committed to providing the most accurate information available to them at the time. This is certainly a group of very well informed Global thinkers. You should be very proud of the continued growth and the success of your organization. Thank you.” “All speakers were readily available for individual discussion both during the conference and in the restaurant/bar afterwards. I would certainly join another International Living conference as I feel the sourcing of the information and quality of the introduction will save a lot of groundwork and provide reliable professionals who will be invaluable for those considering a future life and/or investment in a foreign land.” |
Ever since a trip to San Miguel De Allende, Mexico, as a young girl, International Living reader Louise Vejar of San Francisco had a dream of living in a quaint colonial home.
Years later, on a trip to Granada, Nicaragua, Louise and her husband Allen were drawn to a corner house, a block away from Parque Central. It was a beautiful Spanish colonial home—exactly the kind of home she had dreamed of living in since her childhood. However, her heart sank when she saw no “For Sale” sign posted outside.
“Not to worry,” assured their guide. “I can get that house for you.”
At the time, it was often difficult to tell which properties were on the market. The locals were too proud to display “For Sale” signs on their homes, as this would be seen as an acknowledgement that they were desperate for money.
Louise remembers, “I knew it was my house. It was in need of renovation, but it still had all its original timber doors and floors.”
Thanks to the Vejars’ inside contact, they were able to take action without a hitch—and are now the proud owners of this beautifully renovated colonial home.
At the Ultimate Event II you’ll meet over 90 experts with the same intimate knowledge of local markets and inside connections as the Vejars’ guide—contacts that will help you identify the hottest properties, simplify the buying process, maneuver through red tape, handle cultural and language differences, protect your investment, and much more…
Today, the Vejars own a total of 10 properties in Nicaragua—including a new home in San Juan del Sur—a funky little bohemian beach town centered around a beach set in a protected cove.
“Now we have a spectacular Mediterranean/Roman-style house, with 50-foot Roman columns along the front, 28-foot-high ceilings, and an infinity pool,” Louise says. “The incredible views stretch all the way to Costa Rica, just a 30-minute boat ride away. The house turned out bigger than we had planned and much prettier than we expected…even nicer than the magazine picture we had originally modeled it on.”
Since the Vejars bought their first house in Granada, property values in this country have risen dramatically. While they have not had their properties professionally valued, Louise estimates that some of their holdings have appreciated up to 12 times their original price, and possibly more. Going on prices paid for comparable lots in the area, Louise believes that their $3,500 lot on Lake Nicaragua is now worth well over $100,000.
However, finding her dream home wasn’t Louise’s only accomplishment. She was also able to get in touch with her creative side…and her investment side as well. You see, since moving to Nicaragua 10 years ago, Louise has developed a keen interest in collecting paintings by local artists. Moya, a world-acclaimed artist, is one of her favorites.
“He is an interesting, complex man who creates enormous sculptures,” she tells me. Among the couple’s collection is a two-ton statue of a woman holding a dolphin and a sculptured fountain in the shape of a voluptuous woman.
Louise also collects paintings by the artist Hugo De Palma.“I believe that Central American art is a good investment, and artists here are quickly becoming popular in both this part of the world and internationally.”
How do the Vejars feel about their new life overseas? “We’re used to moving around…it keeps us young,” Louise laughs.

Lief looks for one of two market situations when identifying opportunities to invest—an abundance of opportunity created by a market distortion (crisis investing) or a chance to follow the path of progress (new infrastructure or trends). For example, Lief told his readers to buy property in Argentina shortly after the 2001 financial crisis when CNN was busy showing riots in the streets. Lief and several forward-thinking readers who followed his lead have since enjoyed appreciation of at least 100% in fewer than three years on buys they made in Buenos Aires…plus rental income. He’s also turned readers on to investments in Mexico, Nicaragua, and Romania, buys that have appreciated 160% in 18 months, 120% in 12 months, and 82% in 15 months, respectively. Lief has bought real estate in 16 countries and currently holds real estate investments in a dozen countries. He has lived and worked on 5 continents and travelled to more than 40 countries. His MBA in International Management is from Thunderbird, The Garvin School of International Management, and he has worked for an accounting firm, an international oil company, and as the CFO for a hospitality design and consulting firm that renovates hotels around the world. He is the founding editor of Global Real Estate Investor and is a contributing editor for International Living. Since “retiring” at the end of 2006 Lief has started working more directly with developers consulting on marketing and project funding. The “Frommer” series now totals more than 340 titles dealing with every major destination, and are sold in bookstores around the world. It is the largest-selling series of travel guides in North America. His most recent best-seller was “The New World of Travel” dealing with emerging, non-standard and non-traditional vacations. He has written A Masterpiece Called Belgium, Arthur Frommer’s Branson, Surprising Amsterdam, New York: A Practical Guide, and numerous other guides. He is the founder of “Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel” magazine, and served as its Editor-in-Chief for the first seven years of its existence. Mr. Frommer has written countless magazine articles on a broad variety of travel subjects, as well as a weekly newspaper column which is syndicated nationwide by King Features and appears in such major newspapers as The Los Angeles Times, The Houston Chronicle, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Chicago Tribune, The Newark Star-Ledger, and many others. He also appears each week on the WOR Radio Network with multiple travel reports. His television appearances have been on NBC’s Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Live With Regis And Kelly, and other heavily-viewed telecasts. Finally, he lectures widely on travel to audiences all over America. The major theme of his writings and appearances is the pursuit of value in travel arrangements, and content (as well as pleasure) in the travel experience. Mr. Frommer is a graduate of The Yale University Law School, where he was an editor of The Yale Law Journal, and he is a member of The New York Bar. After service overseas with U.S. Army Intelligence at the time of the Korean War, he practiced law in New York until the growing demands of his travel career required that he give it his full-time attention. He is married to Roberta Brodfeld, the retired associate director of The League Treatment Center (a facility for autistic and other mentally-disabled children) in New York, and has a daughter, Pauline Frommer, who enjoys a prominent travel career of her own, appearing weekly on CNN and MSNBC to comment on travel developments. In 1998, the travel editor of The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel wrote that: “What Benjamin Spock was to babies and Alfred Kinsey was to sex, Arthur Frommer became to travel. Like Spock, he wrote with the authority of experience; like Kinsey, he opened up a whole new world. And while the work of those two men has been eclipsed by others, as well as by changing times and fashions, Frommer remains a powerful, and indefatigable, force in his field”. Frommer will speak at International Living’s Ultimate Event on October 24, 2007—and will conduct a book-signing as well. |

Travel for free, explore Europe's many Mediterranean and Adriatic islands and call it "work". |
You'll find—as with all our live International Living programs—that a certain portion of the real value of the experience comes not in the stress-reducing, money-making, and money-saving information you're gathering…but in the casual interactions you have with the speakers and your fellow attendees.
No doubt that in the off-the-cuff remarks, in the informal exchanges at the bar or around the table at lunch—you learn things you wouldn't pick up any other way.
And we've chosen our speakers because we know them to be not only extremely knowledgeable, but also unendingly generous with their time and expertise. I feel certain you'll find the access you gain at this event truly invaluable.
This opportunity is one that really can open up for you a whole new chapter in your life—give you the flexibility and freedom you crave (and the income you need) to recapture those lost feelings of freedom, wonder, and peace-of-mind.
Note: Although speakers may answer questions about raw land, they may not give you personalized advice concerning securities due to SEC regulations.
